The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists promote the mobility of young artists in order to enrich their personal perspectives, to enable them to engage in an intercultural dialogue and expose them to cultural diversity.

The Programme offers residencies to young artists (between 25 and 35 years old) worldwide. It shares many objectives with the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005), which advocates cultural exchanges and highlights creativity and the need for artists to enrich their experience through contact with other cultures.

These residencies are catalysts for the development of artistic expression in all cultures of the world.

A UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary to the Instituto Sacatar provides:
       • roundtrip airfare between the artist’s nearest international airport and Salvador,  Brazil;
       • a two-month stay at the Sacatar estate on the island of Itaparica, including:
               o     a room with private bath;
               o     a separate studio;
               o     all meals (except Saturday evenings, Sundays and holidays);
               o     laundry service;
               o     logistical support for the execution of the artist’s intentions.
Sacatar provides artists the time and space to produce new work and to interact with the dynamic culture of Bahia.  There is no additional stipend; the artist is responsible for his or her own working materials and any additional personal expenses (local transportation, incidental meals, etc.) for the duration of the residency.
In partnership with the Instituto Sacatar, UNESCO-Aschberg will award two bursaries to Sacatar in 2009.  One Bursary will be awarded in music and/or music composition.  The other Bursary will be awarded in the visual arts.  We interpret visual arts in the broadest terms possible: painting, sculpture, handicrafts, printmaking, photography, ceramics, film, video, installation, performance art, etc.
Unlike Sacatar’s own selection process, which is open to persons in all creative endeavors and from all countries, there are certain restrictions for artists who wish to apply for a Bursary to Sacatar through the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary Programme.  To be eligible to apply for the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary to the Instituto Sacatar, applicants must:
     • Be 25-35 years old at the time of application;
     • Be born and continue to live in Africa, Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands.

There is no application or registration fee.

Applications must be received at the Sacatar office in Brazil no later than November 15, 2008.
