Arts Victoria and the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) are calling for proposals from Victorian artists interested in working collaboratively in residence with one of the following host science organisations:

NANOTECHNOLOGY VICTORIA (NANOVIC), Australia’s leading nanotechnology commercialization company. Nanotechnology is engineering of molecules and groups of molecules that can display novel phenomena. Research area and products under development include new drug delivery mechanisms, medical imaging systems, materials with very high strength or impact resistance, novel pigments, and water purification technologies. http://www.nanovic.com.au/

THE CENTRE FOR ASTROPHYSICS & SUPERCOMPUTING AT SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY is one of the largest astronomy research groups in Australia. Research ranges from studying the formation of planets, testing Einstein's Theory of Relativity, designing the next-generation of radio telescopes, and mapping the large-scale structure of the Universe. The Centre operates a Supercomputer with over 1 Teraflop of processing power and a Virtual Reality theatre. http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/

AUSTRALIAN SYNCHROTRON houses a 3GeV third-generation circular synchrotron that accelerates electrons to almost the speed of light. As the electrons are deflected through magnetic fields, they create narrow bands of extremely bright light which is channelled down beam lines to experimental workstations where it is used in advancing research and development in fields as diverse as biosciences, medical research, environmental sciences, agriculture, minerals exploration, engineering and forensics. http://www.synchrotron.vic.gov.au

The Arts Victoria AIR program, managed by ANAT, is an initiative aiming to support creative partnerships between scientists, researchers and artists, science, industry and art organisations in Victoria. These residencies provide the opportunity for artists to work with key areas of ongoing research and science expertise, whilst contributing to the creative needs of the organisation. This two-way process and desired outcomes of the residency will be developed in consultation with the science organisation, ANAT and the individual artist.

Artists participating in each Residency will receive an artist’s fee of $800 per week for 12 weeks, as well as accommodation, a living-away allowance and return travel to the destination of the residency if applicable. The science organisations will provide the artist with access to personnel, equipment, space, resources, and some costs towards materials and a public outcome.

These residencies are available to Victorian artists with experience in hybrid arts practice and an interest in science. The focus of AIR program is on collaboration, research and development, articulating and evaluating potential benefits, and on possible public outcomes including DVD documentary, publication, forums and exhibitions. Each artist will maintain a blog for the duration of the residency.
