The 2006 pixel.play program supported young artists to develop creative projects using mobile phones and readily available digital technologies. Mobile phones have huge creative potential and have been used in a variety of projects from the creation of SMS poetry and pixel drawings, to sound, animations and short films.
pixel.play workshops and mentoring encouraged young artists to experiment with these new mobile phone technologies. Over 200 young artists (13 -22 years old) from schools, TAFEs and Universities in metropolitan and regional SA were engaged with the program over an 18-month period.
In March 2007, pixel.play won the ‘Innovation in Digital Media’ award category at the SA Short Screen Awards. The project was sponsored by Country Arts SA, SA Youth Arts Board, SA Film Corporation and the Australia Council for the Arts through their Emerging Producers in the Community program.
This program was part of an Emerging Producers In Community (EPIC) Initiative, with emerging producer, Sasha Grbich, joining the ANAT team to develop the regional youth new media arts project. Holly Owen and Hugh Davies assisted with many of the workshops and have continued to support ANAT's delivery of creative mobile phone programs through Portable Worlds.
