Niki Sperou
Niki Sperou works in the genre of Bioart, the hacking of wet biology to make art. She has ongoing connection with ANAT through the Spectra conferences and gatherings, a 2020 Synapse residency titled “Green Plastics; Blue Ocean”, where she developed eco-friendly marine algal bioplastics and polymers, the “A Partnership for Uncertain Times” Project 2022, and “Skin Bible” 2024. For the pilot program ANAT Locale 2026, she will mentor early-career artist Shenshen Zheng.
“When you work collaboratively, people have different agendas, they have different problems they want to solve. That always leads to an uncertain creation.”

Niki Sperou is a South Australian artist, writer and workshop leader with almost three decades of cross-disciplinary engagement in art, science and culture. From 2006-2025 she was the artist-in-residence at the Department of Medical Biotechnology, and the Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development, Flinders University. Her interest in nature, technology, and her cultural background, have led her to draw parallels between biotechnology and Ancient Greek culture. For Sperou these connections emerge in chimerical forms and concepts.
