Creative Antarctica SYMPOSIUM 31 August :: Chaired Creative Antarctica SYMPOSIUM
31 August :: Chaired by ANAT alumnus Philip Samartzis, with featured speakers Adele Jackson, Elizabeth Leane, Eugene Ughetti and ANAT CEO Melissa DeLaney

At a time when Antarctica's future is threatened by warming temperatures and geopolitical tensions, the symposium will offer a broader engagement with the opportunities and tensions underpinning the ice continent.

This special event draws its inspiration from a team of researchers investigating the value and impact of artists and writers who have travelled to the far south to express different thematic and artistic concerns.

Through a series of presentations and discussions, a comprehensive history and analysis of Antarctic stories, sounds, and images produced by Australian artists and writers will emerge.

INTRODUCING the newest member of Team ANAT, Ruby B INTRODUCING the newest member of Team ANAT, Ruby Brazier-Pope, our Groodle-in-Residence. As a Gen Alpha fluent in technology, Ruby has a strong interest in immersive art forms, preferring to work with themes exploring loyalty, affection and protection. Not one for shunning more traditional forms though, she cites ceramics as a favourite (in particular, bone porcelain).

Since starting her residency, Ruby has enjoyed working closely with her new colleagues, excelling in security and ‘the zoomies.’ The therapeutic value of Ruby's HR tasks including offering social support, reducing stress and increasing cognitive abilities, have made for an even happier ANAT office.

Welcome to Team ANAT Ruby!

Seeing Earth, Talking to the Geon
An ANAT Bespoke Residency in partnership with Swinburne University. Dr Peter Morse (TAS) + Prof Christopher Fluke (VIC), Swinburne University.

Collaborators Peter and Chris explored the use of game engines as environments for visualising Earth Observation datasets obtained from satellites. Chris says "along the way, we’ve taken detours into Extended Reality (XR), the Omniverse, and the new world of artificial intelligence via large language models."

"Working with Chris and his team at the SmartSat CRC" says Peter "has been a career highlight for me - what an incredible opportunity to combine my interests and expertise in experimental media arts, game engines and geoscientific visualisation! "

Chris says "working with Peter has exceeded all of my expectations - and they were already very high to begin with. The ANAT Bespoke Residency was the ideal environment for the two of us to bounce ideas around and experiment with new digital technologies and approaches."

To wrap up the residency, at the conclusion of their six month collaboration, Peter covers the ideas and workflows they established, some problems, and future directions to explore in a conclusion video presentation.

What advice would you give to your younger self? “Don’t take your research quite so seriously! Not everyone is going to make paradigm-changing discoveries and that is okay. What is more important is to find good people to work with who inspire you to be creative, even if that means moving beyond your own research comfort zone. There is a lot you can learn from — and incorporate in your approaches to problem-solving and discovery — by looking outside of your own discipline."

Professor Christopher Fluke is our featured Q&A July guest.

👏 A warm and heartfelt thank you to Professor C 👏 A warm and heartfelt thank you to Professor Christopher (Chris) Fluke, who has been connected with ANAT for over twenty years.

For the past six years he has been a vital member of our Board, particularly in his role as a member and Chair of ANAT’s Risk Subcommittee. With a longer a legacy of working directly with ANAT, Chris' knowledge and background as an astrophysicist has made him a highly regarded research collaborator.

ANAT CEO Melissa DeLaney says “to work alongside Chris has been an absolute pleasure. He has brought steady, calm and pragmatic viewpoints and is someone I not only trust but also hold in high esteem. His careful eye and advice on risk, finance, the value of artists and more broadly his stewardship for ANAT and the team is greatly appreciated. As Chris finishes his term with ANAT we salute him.”

We will continue to be able to enjoy opportunities to collaborate with Chris, such as his recent work in concert with Dr Peter Morse on the Playable Earth project.

Chris is the SmartSat Professorial Chair in space system real-time data fusion, integration, and cognition at Swinburne University of Technology. He holds an academic position with Swinburne’s Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing and was the foundation Director of Swinburne’s Advanced Visualisation Laboratory (Digital Capability Research Platform).
